Scientific evidence from brain research shows why education and fine arts must walk together.

Exposing students to fine arts has a big impact on the human brain, promoting emotional intelligence and cognitive development, creating positive results in the educational process. As Eric Jensen, one of the leading translators in the world of neuroscience into education, states in his book Arts with the Brain in Mind, “The systems they nourish, which include our integrated sensory, attentional, cognitive, emotional, and motor capacities, are, in fact, the driving forces behind all other learning.”

Even though art is not well recognized as an important part of the educational system. It carries lots of benefits, specifically on the acquisition of new skills. Art is like a workout for the brain. This amazing skill helps improve other academic disciplines like verbal, reading, and math skills. Producing artistic projects, inspires the student to problem solve and decision-making which are constantly applied during the exercises. Pursuing arts allows the learner to exercise flexible thinking and incorporates a high number of crucial cognitive skills.

Benefits of Art

Art education supports emotional intelligence development, using personal interactions that facilitate the acquisition of social skills and emotional strategies. Studies have shown that art encourages students to be empathetic, better listeners, and more cooperative. On the other hand, art helps as a form of personal expression, soothing the heart and the mind. Stimulating emotional responses to be more aware when viewing or creating any type of art.

The solution is: Art

Overall, art education forms a very important part of the school curriculum puzzle. Helping students from Transitional Kindergarten to High School level to promote intrapersonal and interpersonal skills that are highly beneficial for the student’s success in school and the future. This wonderful skill set shapes our minds for the better and nurtures our society to work in sympathy with each other.
