The past Saturday, February 19th was our first night out for an “indoor event” in over two years.
A month ago I received a Facebook notification about an event happening close to me. The location was the Harris Center in Folsom, CA. The FB event poster contained a picture of a couple wearing authentic Mexican attire and dancing a traditional dance from the state of “Jalisco”. Of course, the picture captured my eye in the first place, but what my husband and I witnessed that night- was ASTOUNDING!
When I found out about this event I did not know if it would be something that my husband would like to watch. I grew up in a small town in Mexico. My parents used to take me and my siblings to the local theater when plays were in town. I continued with this hobby all the way to college, where the building that I spent of my time, Communications, was right next to the artistic ones like Visual and Performing Arts. I met friends from those faculties and was invited to many shows, art presentations, and even new releases of international artists at the museum “MARCO” in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. In other words, I was totally ready to visit our local theater in Folsom and bring back the good times.
Living Legends presented their show called “Storytellers”, performed by the Brigham Young University students from Utah. Certainly, my husband did not know what to expect from the show and my assumptions about it being a Folkloric Dance show from Mexico were not exactly correct. The show had a very unique way to blend a story with culture. The Artistic and Technical Directors, Tech Team, and Performers performed the show extremely well. This event was more than what I was looking for; it was very educational, motivational, and up-lifting and promoted values like, UNITY, SUPPORT, and LOVE.
The Harris Center definitively took me back to my old memories. The place was very neat and the staff were super helpful and friendly. The two-hour show went by so fast, and my husband enjoyed the show perhaps more than I did. So much so, that he ended up forgetting his phone on his seat and we had to wait until a staff member found it and returned it.
Even though it was the first week since the optional use of masks in-doors, the Harris Center kept the mask requirement and proof of vaccination card. Make sure you read requirements before attending any event!
Do you know about other local cultural events coming up? Let me know in the comments section. ;)
